The first attractions that I can mention are the cathedral of Ayia Sophia, which is now a mosque in the Turkish north, and the Selimiye Mosque, again in the North. You could also see the old city walls and the Venetian column, both built by the Venetians. The local architecture is also admirable, but beautfiul buildings are spread all over the city, I can't mention a particular one. You will also be astonished by the signs of division between the Greek south and Turkish north, the most prominent being the famous "green line".
